Established in 1873, the University of Canterbury has a proud heritage of teaching
and research excellence, offering undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Arts,
Commerce, Education, Engineering, Fine Arts, Forestry, Law, Music and Science. Its
research strengths across engineering, science, ICT, forestry and others generate
a steady flow of ideas to feed innovation. With a strategic intent to Challenge,
Concentrate and Connect, the University seeks to maximise the transfer of ideas
generated by its research in order to maximise the benefit to New Zealand.
Research & Innovation (R&I) provides support to all phases of the University’s research
effort, from identifying research needs and securing research funds (including contract
research for the private sector), to transferring the research outcomes into relevant
marketplaces. R&I works with researchers and external commercial entities to identify
ideas with commercial potential and transfer them to parties who can bring them
to commercial fruition.
Commercial transfer activities include start-ups (e.g. SYFT Technologies Ltd has
developed Selected Ion Flow Tube Mass Spectrometry into industrial analysis instrumentation),
licensing (e.g. Environmental Prediction System licensed to Aurecon for assessing
potential windfarm sites), and direct sales (e.g. Build AR augmented reality software
sold on-line).
