WHAT IS KIWINET

The Kiwi Innovation Network (KiwiNet) is a consortium of Universities and Crown Research Institutes who are dedicated to taking a collaborative approach to research commercialisation. The consortium consists of Plant and Food Research, Callaghan Innovation (which incorporates Industrial Research Limited), AgResearch, Otago Innovation, Lincoln University, University of Canterbury, Viclink, WaikatoLink and AUT Enterprises Ltd. Through KiwiNet, we seek to increase the scale and impact of scientific and technology based innovation with the aim of providing greater economic benefits to New Zealand.

KiwiNet does not carry out research commercialisation itself, instead acting as a focal point for collaboration and co-ordination between those who do commercialise research. KiwiNet’s role is to empower people who are involved in research commercialisation by helping them to access the tools, connections, investment and support they need.

By collaborating on projects, combining capability and sharing networks, we, at KiwiNet, believe that we can better leverage the limited resources available for commercialisation, and help one another achieve better commercial outcomes for New Zealand.

In the past 18 months, KiwiNet have shown that with goodwill, trust, effort and leadership, an alliance between NZ research organisations is not only possible, but is also capable of achieving great things. KiwiNet’s collaborative approach has the ability to not only strengthen research commercialisation, but to also create new opportunities in other parts of the value chain that would otherwise be unlikely to occur.

KiwiNet Ecosystem

OUR PURPOSE

To empower and enable New Zealand’s public research organisations to better commercialise their ideas, intellectual property and capability to boost economic outcomes for New Zealand.

OUR VISION

A highly collaborative innovation ecosystem in New Zealand with strong alignment between research and business to drive economic growth.

SUPPORT CONNECTIONS AND COLLABORATION

SUPPORT

KiwiNet’s Support activities are focused on empowering those who are commercialising publically funded research by helping them to access the tools, connections, investment, networks and support that they need. KiwiNet’s goal is to enable research organisations to better leverage the limited resources and capability available to achieve greater impact from their innovations.

CONNECTION

KiwiNet’s Connection activities have been reaching into regions across the country and to organisations around the world. Core principles of KiwiNet’s connectivity are greater visibility, early engagement and a national portfolio approach. Industry, investors and international organisations are attracted to KiwiNet by its provision of one window through which to view the technologies and capability of a large number of research organisations across New Zealand.

COLLABORATION

KiwiNet’s Collaboration activities are based on the principle that by working together the impact of each organisation’s commercialisation efforts is magnified. KiwiNet is opening the door to increased collaboration through the facilitation of opportunities for organisations to support each another to commercialise projects and to identify opportunities to combine technologies for a common market opportunity or need.
